The International Year of Astronomy
For three years, the astronomy community has prepared for the year 2009--the International Year of Astronomy, endorsed by UNESCO and a result of the creation of the International Astronomical Union. The primary goal of the Year is to augment scientific awareness around the entire world. This will be accomplished by enabling widespread access to astronomical information, encouraging participation in astronomical activities, and by launching initiatives in developing countries.
In addition, according to the official Year of Astronomy Web site, "The vision of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society."
Part of the festivities will include the commemoration of Galileo's telescope, which has been helping us see into space for the last 400 years. Other activities include: various observing opportunities, reenactments of space history, and informational meetings and lectures.
So, make this, the International Year of Astronomy's slogan, your New Year's resolution for 2009: "The universe, yours to discover."
